Writing Tip #2783:Write In Freeflow ModeWriting and reviewing are two very different mindsets, and they use alternate sides of the brain. When you’re writing, your brain should be in creative flow mode, which uses the right side of the brain. The right hemisphere draws on storytelling, imagination, and conceptual thinking to produce something fresh.Reviewing, meanwhile, is strategic and detail oriented. This is a left-brain skill that relies on logic, process, and methodology to refine ideas. The best writing happens when you forget about personal revisions and, instead, just let your mind fall into a free-flow state that unleashes your inherent creativity. You can always go back through your ideas to improve them later. But to do so, your ideas must have left the confines of your mind and have landed on the blank page. You can’t revise until the ideas are out in the open.Just write. Let your thoughts flow, and capture everything you want to say without filtering your ideas or thinking too hard about it.Consider writing your first draft as an extended brainstorming exercise, then just run with it. There are no bad ideas in brainstorming. If you struggle with free-flow writing, you might prefer to record yourself speaking and transcribe your voice notes into text. This is a quick way of capturing ideas that can be tidied up later to produce your first draft.

Should you self-edit your book?If you’re feeling book-fatigued or too busy to faff around with your finished draft, then it’s perfectly acceptable to just give your raw manuscript straight to the editing team, and they’ll be happy to do it all for you. However, we recommend giving your book a self-edit before doing this if you can. This allows you to go back through your freeform writing and check that you’ve said everything you want to say, the way you want to say it.Nobody knows more about your subject matter than you do, so it’s worth taking your ideas as far as you can yourself once your first draft is done.Your job in the self-edit is to make sure that you’re happy with the essence of your book before getting constructive feedback from others. When you’re happy with your work, it’s often worth asking a few people to read your final draft or discuss it with trusted people in your inner circle. Only do this if you know they will be honest and objective and if you’re comfortable taking their feedback as a constructive critique to pass to your editing team.Remember, your best writing appears when you let your brain write in a natural, free-flow state without thinking about grammar, perfecting your writing, or self-editing as you go.This is effectively brainstorming on paper, and it produces no bad ideas.Once you have extracted your draft from inside your mind, then you’ll want to pass back through your text with up to three rounds of self-editing.

If you have a meeting with a client in your normal working life, do you struggle to find the right words to assist them, or do you just tell people how you can help them and sell yourself with confidence?Chances are, you’re already communicating effectively every day. We don’t tend to think much about normal speech because we’ve been practicing verbal communication since we were tiny toddlers. The key word here is “practice.”When you have a regular writing routine, then writing becomes second nature, and the fear of writing starts to go away.Start small. Write 100–300 words on your topic, then put it aside for a day and come back to it with fresh eyes. See if you can spot ways to improve it, then write another 100–300 words on the same topic. When you’re comfortable with your own writing, give it to somebody else to read for feedback. The more you practice this skill, the easier it will become to finesse your writing style.Once you’re confident in writing a few hundred words, expand your reach into a full-length article. If you can write 1,000 words, then you’re ready to write a book.

Writing a book? Don't skip the research stage!Take a day off and visit your local library or head to your favorite bookshop. See what books are available on your topic and make some research notes.Which books are your direct competitors?Skim a few chapters, paying close attention to style and structure. Is it formal, casual, conversational, or something else?Make a list of all the books on your topic, and then split them into a “green” list for the books you like and a “red” list for the books you don’t like.Start with your green list. Why do you like these books? What do they achieve for the reader, and how do they deliver results? What don’t you like about the books on your red list? Why did you choose one book over another? Is it because you liked the way the information was presented? Because the style resonates? Or because the cover caught your eye from the outset? When you have a clear view of what works, and what doesn’t work, it’s time to think about your book.
