What we love about 24 Hour Fitness
So much to love about 24 Hour Fitness. No gym is perfect, but this chain sure does check off many boxes. It's no wonder they've considered one of the best gyms in the nation.
24-hour-a-day access to many (but not all of their clubs). They've started to open and include more clubs to this list since 2022, and we're huge fans of late night workouts!
Abundance of aqua amenities. Nearly all locations have a pool, steam room and sauna. If a pool is on your must-have list, then 24 is a must-consider gym chain.
Awesome opportunities for basketball players. With so many locations that have a basketball court, folks looking to hoop on hardwood definitely must appreciate 24 Hour Fitness—me included!
What we wish 24 Hour Fitness would improve
While 24's overall offerings will please most folks, there are still some things we'd like to see from the popular chain.
We wish all of their locations were open 24-hours-a-day. 40% of them are (110 gyms) which is a great start. It's also a brand-identity crisis, really. They need to stick to their nameplate.
Parents all over the country wish they would bring back childcare. Options are limited, and an extra set of hands—especially at the gym—is a health and wellness gamechanger.
Prices were more competitive with the upcoming competition. Guess what: it looks like they are.
How much is 24 Hour Fitness?
24 Hour Fitness is a mid-tier gym chain—with monthly pricing that hovers anywhere from $24.99 to $57.99 a month. However, there are many specials and deals to be had, which can bring the overall cost down. In 2022 and 2023, we've seen amazing deals with monthly membership costs that hover around $23. Know that these are often 1-year deals, where you must pay the entire amount up-front.Here are the exact membership types:
- Silver $24.99/month - Single Club Access. Not available everywhere, and usually just for their old "Active" locations.
- Gold $34.99 to $42.99/month - Regional Access
- Platinum $54.99 to $57.99/month - National Access (all gyms). At this membership level, you also get 2 Buddy Passes
What do the tiers mean for amenities and equipment? Nothing, really. All levels get you all the cardio, free weights, strength machines, turf areas, studio classes, cycle classes, basketball courts, pools, saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs.
What's regional access? 24 Hour Fitness allows at the Gold membership tier, ability to join any of the listed clubs.
- For the San Francisco Bay Area, it's 58 clubs that cover SF, San Jose, Marin County and all the way into Sacramento.
- For Los Angeles
Amount of your annual fee depends on which membership level you go with. We've seen a $49.99 fee for Gold and Platinum memberships, and $29.99 for the Yearly paid-in-full options. Both are billed about 14 days from signing up.
Most 24 Hour Fitness gyms have 4-6 different membership options. For all but one of them: initiation fees have been $0. The one that did charge? Just $1.

How much is 24 Hour Fitness?
Typical memberships range from around $29 to $59 per month, dependent on your geographical location. Do know that deals can be had—we've seen their promos as low as $23 a month provided you pay up the whole 1 or 2-years up front.
Can you wear jeans at 24 Hour Fitness?
Theirmember policystates "requires you wear appropriate clothing" during your visit. "Street clothes... and jeans are not appropriate." Do yourself a favor and wear the right gear. It's not only more comfortable during your workout, but at times safer and more functional.
Does 24 Hour Fitness allow filming?
More from theirmember policy page: "Taking photos or filming of others is not permitted without their prior knowledge or consent."What they're trying to do here is make sure you're not filming someone (even in the background) without them knowing. Are people using tripods to track their workouts/personal gains? We'd be lying if we didn't say yes. Our advice: do it in a controlled, respectful manner. You also absolutely can't film in the locker room, steam room, pool and sauna areas.

24 Hour Fitness is not a franchisee fitness chain. It is a private company owned by several investment capital groups. However:
- Back in 2004, a partnership formed between Shaq and 24, with the creation of a "24 Hour Fitness Shaq Sports Club" in Miami.
- The partnership included using Shaq as the face of 24's marketing in print, TV and more. As of December 2023, that partnership is no longer active.

Mark Mastrov founded 24 Hour Fitness back in 1983 under the name 24 Hour Nautilus. It was a single location in San Leandro, California—that spread to over 400 at one point. Mark has gone on to build numerous other fitness ventures, including a hand in the Sacramento Kings, esports gaming team NRG, UFC Gym, 49ers Fit and more. 24 continued their journey but also fell on tough times during the pandemic, going through bankruptcy. They are now past that phase, and on track to open more gyms in 2023 and 2024.

Gym Pricing Tiers Explained
There are 3-4 main pricing tiers that nearly all gyms across the country fall into. Generally, higher prices = more amenities and services.
$10 - $25 /month — Value
- Standard/basic equipment
- Cardio machines: treadmills, ellipticals
- Various free-weights, strength machines
$15 - $30 /month — High Value Low Price
- All the above, plus a few have saunas or pools
- Massage and/or Tanning options
- Expect newer style amenities like Olympic lifting platforms, functional turf and cardio cinema.
$25 - $65 Monthly — Mid-Tier
- All the above, placed in larger facilities and spaces. Pools, saunas and steam are a must.
- Basketball courts and childcare were the main amenities.
- These are your "older"more aged "big-box" gyms, often with hundreds of locations spanning the country
$65 and up — Boutique/Specialty/Luxury
- Highest end cardio equipment with advanced, expensive machines
- Specialty group training and fitness classes
- Luxury or boutique locker rooms, workspaces and lounges

24 Hour Fitness is a do-it-all big-box gym chain that is extremely popular nationwide. You'll get larger footprint locations with more amenities and more services vs the competition, plus the convenience of multiple gym access. If you need a pool, sauna/steam or basketball, then absolutely consider them.
Don't forget that while their name says "24 Hour," not all locations are open all night. We commend their efforts to open back up multiple locations 24/7, though. The number of locations to workout all-night has climbed up to 110 of their 283 total—for an impressive 40%. Clustered around major metros, that means you probably have a 24/7 location nearby.
When we look at pricing, 24 Hour Fitness had previously defined the "mid-tier" gym category (one that that offers "full-sized" amenities such as pools and basketball courts, with a monthly cost of about $25 to $40). That cost has started to fall since 2020—giving thousands nationwide the chance to move into a better featured gym at a lower price.
Depending on your location, you may be able to find monthly memberships in the low ~$20 range, and its becoming common to see $1 or $0 enrollment/join fees.
This all benefits you, the customer, as the gym space has started to get more competitive overall. With other "budget" fitness centers pricing their monthly memberships in the same range, 24 is increasingly attractive. Why? These cheaper budget gyms may have great prices—but come up short—where 24 will shine.
We mentioned pools (235 locations!) and basketball (187 locations!)—but don't forget that steam is offered (238 locations) as well as hot tubs (243 locations). Add in multiple gyms with popular Olympic lifting platforms, functional turf areas, saunas and... 24 Hour Fitness rises to the top for gyms with excellent value.
Is this worth it? We don't doubt it: their thousands of happy members can attest. With hundreds of locations that bring a value-packed slew of amenities—at stunningly great prices—24 Hour Fitness is worth every dime.
