A very likable story marred by bland acting and reveal that is as tasteless as water.

    Noirvember watch #30

Watched under its American title, The Unholy Four. But the original title, A Stranger Came Home, is much better.

It had been a long time since I fired up Cult Cinema Classics on YouTube. So since I was going to be meeting my goal of 30 films before the end of the month, I figured I'd find something else off the beaten path, rather than just sticking to Criterion.

This was a decent noir-tinged whodunit, with multiple characters coming together from a shared past when bodies start dropping and suspicions arise every which way. I liked the way it started, with a man coming back to his old town, old friends and estranged wife after he disappeared…

  • Review by Lencho of the Apes ★★★

Early Hammer, directed by Terence Fisher; there were a few moments of noir nihilism so intense that I perked up to fullest attention... but they were very brief and disappeared early on, and the movie as a whole occupied a more conventional headspace that didn't do a lot for me. Looks nice, though.

Terence Fisher’s British film-noir about a man who comes back home after four years away to try and find out who it was amongst a trio of his acquaintances who attempted to murder him.

The story concerns an amnesiac Englishman (William Sylvester) who goes back to his wife (Paulette Goddard) after a couple of years and discovers he’s a suspect for a killing.

William Sylvester (2001: A Space Odyssey) gives an okay performance in his role as Philip Vickers, the man who finds himself accused of doing something awful, but doesn’t show a huge amount of determination in terms of trying to clear his name.

Elsewhere, Paulette Goddard (Modern Times, The Great Dictator, So Proudly We Hail) is alright as…

A solid hammer produced mystery/crime drama directed by hammer regular Terence Fisher and featuring a little bit older Paulette Goddard. Nothing real stand out here but for the 80 minute runtime I was entertained & kept in suspense.

  • Review by Ruben Quiroga Kanahuaty ★★

A cold british indie noir with a star. its very proper and fairly entertaining but unclear. It takes loose turns.

  • Review by Ariel Schudson ★★★½

Having a great time looking at the AKA titles of these Hammer Noir Terrance Fisher films. This was great. Would've thought that Paulette Goddard would've stole the show but it was ALL ABOUT William Sylvester. Damn.

    Hammer Film Tuesday #25

Philip Vickers (William Sylvester) returns home after being clobbered and dumped overboard during a boating trip with three of his mates four years earlier. Of course the plot is all about Vickers trying to figure out which of his former friends wanted him dead, but also sussing out who murdered one of them on the very same night Vickers returned to reunite with his wife Angie (Pauline Goddard). There's no lack of galley of suspects as all three of Vickers mates, have been making determined attempts att courting Angie, who everyone has presumed is a widow. All part of the plan, or coincidence, and what is Angie's connection to it all, if any...

What initially comes across as a "whodunnit", rapidly evolves into something that is more who is doing it as each possible lead to solving Vickers mystery, presents further mystery of who is bumping off the suspects.

    Solid Hammer noir.

  • Review by Ripplin ★★★½

Long presumed dead, Philip Vickers (William Sylvester) returns home and gives everyone the shock of their lives. He had been on a fishing trip in Portugal with three friends, received a blow to the head which gave him amnesia, and is now seems bent on revenge, based on what little he knows. Soon after his arrival, one of those friends is found dead. Everyone assumes Vickers did it, but he insists he didn't, so it's up to Insp. Treherne (Russell Napier) to find out the truth.

For such a low key, somewhat talky movie, I found it quite compelling! I think that's mainly due to Sylvester and his character. The whole cast was good (Paulette Goddard as Vickers' wife Angie…

  • Review by Robert Reineke ★★

Not one of Terence Fisher's better crime films. The protagonist is unlikable, Paulette Goddard gives a pretty weak performance, and much of the film is simply people standing around in rooms accusing each other. There's some craft on display, but not enough to salvage the film.

  • Review by Isaac Williams ★★★

“I don’t like people very much. Not even the people I like.”

  • Review by jamawive ★★

A whodunnit with Noiry vibes. A bit of a mishmash, or maybe I wasn't paying proper attention.
