There are plenty of materials needed to build your own homestead in Skyrim like nails, glass, and straw. But one vital material, that players seem to be running out of often, is sawn logs. Sawn logs are needed in large quantities and despite there being numerous ways to get them, players are always looking for even easier ways. This is why we decided to put together this guide to tell you, what the command to get sawn logs in Skyrim is.

- Since the item never shows up in your inventory, the only way to check how many sawn logs you have in your possession is to check your log pile placed on your estates.
How do you get sawn logs for free in Skyrim?
You can get sawn logs for free if you raise the disposition of lumber merchants high enough for them to consider you their friend. But there’s a catch you will have to cut the lumber yourself. Considering that 20 sawn logs cost 200 gold, this is not such a bad deal at all. The process however can be time-consuming due to the long animations that you need to take part in order to cut the lumber.
Lumber merchants and mills are placed all over Skyrim and it’s hard to walk for a long time without running into one, however not all lumber merchants are eligible to offer your lumber for free. Only certain lumber merchants will offer your extra quests or activities to raise your disposition with them to a “friend level” which allows you to cut wood for free and keep it of course. The lumber merchants that allow you to cut lumber for free are:
- Aeri at Anga’s Mill
- Bolund at lumber mill in Falktreath
- Gilfre at Mixtwater Mill
- Grosta at Heartwood Mill
- Hert at Half-Moon Mill (Hert might be dead since her husband Hern is one of the Dark Brotherhood assassination targets)
- Hod at Riverwood Mill
- Kharag gro-Shurku at Solitude Sawmill
- Thonnir at Morthal Mill
Some of these NPCs might allow you to cut lumber for free after you’ve chopped enough firewood for them, or you managed to complete one of the many radiant sidequests available. If the lumber merchant’s disposition is not high enough, you will have to pay for your lumber just like anybody else.
Sending your steward to buy lumber for you will always cost you money, meaning that you cannot take advantage of the friendship with the lumber merchant when buying lumber via steward.
How do you add sawn logs with console commands?
You can add sawn logs by using the player.additem command you can add as many sawn logs as you like. Once again it’s important to mention that sawn logs are never in your real inventory, instead, they get delivered to your estates in the form of a log pile. The more lumber you have the bigger the pile will get and vice versa, if you run out of sawn logs the lumber pile will disappear completely.
All three Hearthfire homesteads share a single log pile that appears on all three estates. This means that spending all your lumber at Heljarchen Hall will result in the lumber pile disappearing at Lakeview Manor and Windstad Manor as well. To add the sawn logs with the use of commands, follow these steps:
- Open the console by pressing “~”.
- Typeplayer.additem xx00300e [quantity]. Replace the xx with the number that Hearthfire has in your load order. Heartfire is third in my load order so so for me the Item ID for sawn logs is 0300300e. Replace the [quantity] with the number of desired logs as well.
- Press enter.
- Since sawn logs will not appear in your inventory, the only way to check whether the command was successful is to check out your lumber pile at one of the homesteads.

- adding clay: Player.additem xx003043 [Quantity]
- adding glass: Player.additem xx005A69 [Quantity]
- adding goat horns: Player.additem xx00303f [Quantity]
- adding quarried stone: Player.additem xx00306c [Quantity]
- adding straw: Player.additem xx005A68 [Quantity]
- adding hinges: Player.additem xx003011 [Quantity]
- adding iron fittings: Player.additem xx003035 [Quantity]
- adding locks: Player.additem xx003012 [Quantity]
- adding nails: Player.additem xx00300f [Quantity]
Don’t forget to replace xx with the load order number and [quantity] with the desired number of items.
Why can’t I buy sawn logs in Skyrim?
The most probable reason for not being able to buy sawn logs in Skyrim is that the map marker is pointing you in the wrong direction. One of the map markers to buy sawn logs in Skyrim is Half-Moon Mill owned and operated by a vampire NPC called Hert.
Hert’s husband, Hern, is an unfortunate target of an assassination quest given to you by the Dark Brotherhood, so if you assassinate him before you start acquiring materials for your homestead, you won’t be able to buy lumber from Half-Moon Mill due to Hert as well becoming aggressive when she sees you attacking her husband. The quest marker will keep pointing toward the Half-Moon Mill, however.
The easiest and only way to go around is to simply make your way toward some other mill and acquire lumber there. The quest marker will disappear as soon as you buy lumber elsewhere.
And that’s pretty much it, as you can see acquiring sawn logs is easy, and even if you don’t want to spend money on them, you still have options without resorting to using console commands.
